A 1950s Borough, Street by Street

Asphalt paving in Whitehall mostly means driveways from one decade. Whitehall separated from Baldwin Township on January 5, 1948, after a petition signed by 1,320 of 1,627 freeholders. It had 7,342 people in 1950 and 16,075 by 1960, more than doubling in ten years, and has stayed between about 14,000 and 16,500 since. With 15,064 residents on about 3.32 square miles in 2020, it is one of the denser suburbs south of the city, at roughly 4,530 people per square mile. A large share of its driveways went in during the 1950s.

Seventy-year-old driveways

A driveway from the 1950s has seen seventy winters. Many in Whitehall have been patched, sealed and overlaid repeatedly. The usual problems are alligator cracking from a base that has softened over time, a broken apron at the street, and a surface that has crept up above the garage floor or sidewalk from stacked overlays. When the base has failed, we take the old asphalt out, dig out soft material, put down and compact fresh stone and pave. When the base is still firm, a resurfacing overlay with the edges milled at the garage and street can work.

Short drives, close neighbors

Whitehall lots are compact, with short driveways and houses close together. We use equipment that fits, protect lawns, walks and neighboring driveways, and keep the street clear. Most residential jobs are finished quickly, and we let you know when the new surface can take a car.

Route 51 and Brownsville Road

Wikipedia describes Pennsylvania Route 51 as a major artery carrying traffic from and through Whitehall to downtown Pittsburgh. The borough's name likely comes from Silas D. Prior's tavern on Brownsville Road, renamed White Hall in the 1850s. Homes and businesses with entrances on Route 51 are on a state road, and changes at the entrance within PennDOT right-of-way can require a Highway Occupancy Permit. For borough streets, we check with Whitehall first.

Commercial and community lots

Caste Village is the borough's main retail center, and the municipal complex includes a pool, tennis courts, the library and a community room. Shopping centers, offices, churches and clubs in and around the borough need lot patching, sealcoating and restriping. We phase the work so parking stays open.

Borders

Whitehall borders Overbrook in Pittsburgh to the north, Brentwood to the northeast, Baldwin to the south and east, Bethel Park to the southwest and Castle Shannon to the northwest. We work in all of them. Call (412) 796-9361 to set up a visit.

Whitehall Questions

My Whitehall driveway is from the 1950s. Repair or replace?

If it has widespread cracking, soft spots or a broken apron, replace it with a new base. If it is still flat and firm, an overlay can work.

Why is my driveway higher than the sidewalk?

Usually from overlays stacked over the years. We mill or remove old layers so the new surface sits flush.

Do you repave lots near Caste Village?

Yes. We patch, sealcoat and stripe commercial lots and phase the work so parking stays open.
