Paving Between the Airport and the Ohio River

Asphalt paving in Moon Township serves one of the busiest corners of the region. Pittsburgh International Airport became the area's main airport in 1951, and after the passenger terminal moved to Findlay Township in 1991, Moon rebuilt itself around the airport's cargo area, offices and Robert Morris University, whose main campus enrolls nearly 5,000 students. University Boulevard was named in 2003 from the former Beers School and Narrows Run Roads. The township counted 27,261 people in 2020, up from 22,290 in 2000, and we pave driveways, business lots and access drives across its 24.1 square miles.

Broken and hilly land

A late 1700s account quoted on Wikipedia described the land here as broken and hilly, and that still holds. The township is cut by the Thorn Run, Montour Run and Narrows Run valleys and borders the Ohio River on the north. Residential streets run along ridges and down into those valleys, so driveways often slope. We build the base to resist creep on grades and set the surface to carry water off the side before it reaches the garage or the street.

Homes from several eras

Mooncrest was built in 1943 as federal housing for defense workers at Dravo Corp. and sold to private investors in the mid-1950s. Coraopolis Heights, the Carnot-Moon area and later subdivisions filled in over the following decades, and the 2000 census counted 9,200 housing units. That range means we see everything from narrow, patched driveways on older lots to wide two-car drives in newer plans that just need crack sealing and sealcoating to stay ahead of the weather.

Business and cargo-area pavement

Office buildings, hotels, warehouses and service businesses near the airport and along University Boulevard deal with heavier vehicles than a typical retail lot. Truck routes, loading areas and dumpster pads need a thicker base and surface than the parking stalls, and that is where these lots usually fail first. We patch, mill and overlay, rebuild failed truck lanes, sealcoat and restripe, and phase the work around shifts and deliveries.

Interstate 376 and state roads

The old Route 60 corridor is now Interstate 376, the Parkway West, and the Cherrington Parkway extension opened in early 2008. Where a private driveway or lot entrance meets a state road, PennDOT's fact sheet says a Highway Occupancy Permit is needed before installing or altering it within the right-of-way. We confirm which agency owns the road and what it requires before working at an entrance.

Campus-area rentals and shared drives

Rental homes and small apartment buildings near the university often share a driveway or have a gravel pad that owners want paved. We can pave these in a day or two and schedule around tenants. Call (412) 796-9361 for a free estimate.

Moon Township Questions

Do you pave truck areas and loading docks near the airport?

Yes. We build truck lanes, loading areas and dumpster pads with a heavier base and surface than the parking stalls, since those areas carry the most weight.

Can you pave a gravel driveway at a rental near Robert Morris?

Yes. We grade and compact the existing stone, add more where needed and pave, usually in one or two days.

My driveway connects to a state road. What permit do I need?

PennDOT requires a Highway Occupancy Permit before installing or altering a driveway within its right-of-way. We check whether your work reaches that area before we schedule.
