Paving in a Township That Grew Late
Asphalt paving in Peters Township is mostly work on driveways that are younger than those in the older South Hills suburbs to the north. Peters was incorporated in 1781 as one of Washington County's thirteen original townships, but Wikipedia notes it stayed sparsely populated and rural until the 1950s. It had just 3,004 residents in 1950. By 2000 it had 17,566, by 2010 21,213 and by 2020 22,946. Housing units rose from 6,221 in 2000 to 7,559 in 2010. Much of the pavement here went down in the last thirty years.
Three communities, one township
The township includes McMurray and Thompsonville in the northwest and Venetia in the southeast, with the small coal settlement of Hackett east of Venetia. Its main roads are U.S. Route 19, running north and south, and East McMurray Road, running east and west. The northwest side near Route 19 is more built up. The southeast side keeps more of its rural character, with larger lots and longer driveways.
Protect newer pavement early
A driveway from the 2000s or 2010s is usually still structurally sound, and the goal is to keep it that way. Sunlight oxidizes the surface, small cracks open, and water gets into the base. Crack sealing and sealcoating every few years are the most cost-effective things you can do for a younger driveway. If the surface has started to wear or ravel but the base is firm, a thin overlay can renew it without a tear-out.
Coal country underneath
Wikipedia notes that the township began as a farming community and that coal later became a major industry, with settlements like Hackett developing around mining. In parts of Washington County, that history can mean old mine workings or fill below the surface. If a section of driveway keeps settling after repair, we look at the ground underneath before deciding how much base to rebuild.
Wider driveways and turnarounds
Many homeowners in the township ask us to widen a driveway for an extra car, add a parking pad for a trailer or boat, or build a turnaround so cars do not back onto a busy road. We cut a clean joint along the existing pavement, build a full stone base under the new area and pave so the seam stays tight. Where the driveway meets Route 19 or another state road, changes at the entrance can require a PennDOT Highway Occupancy Permit, and we confirm that before we touch the right-of-way.
Parks and community lots
Peterswood Park, home to the Peters Township Recreation Center, sports fields and an amphitheater, is a reminder of how much this township has invested in shared space. We also pave, sealcoat and stripe lots for churches, offices and small businesses along the Route 19 corridor. Call (412) 796-9361 for a free estimate.
