Driveways in a Hilly Park Township

Asphalt paving in South Park Township means working on hilly ground around one of the region's largest parks. Wikipedia describes the township's topography as quite hilly, and South Park itself, a 1,999-acre Allegheny County recreation area, covers about one-third of the township's 9.2 square miles. The rest is residential neighborhoods: Broughton, Bruceton, Curry, Library, Piney Fork and Snowden. The township had 13,416 residents in 2010, and many of the homes sit on sloped lots with driveways that climb or descend from the road.

From mining villages to a park township

The township was formed in 1845 as Snowden Township, named for John M. Snowden, and renamed South Park by referendum in 1966. Wikipedia notes that Snowden was once a small mining community, and in the 1930s the county acquired large farm parcels, mostly in Snowden Township, to create South Park. Library was once called Loafer's Hollow. The older village centers have homes on small lots with short, steep drives. Later subdivisions have wider driveways and gentler grades.

Water on sloped lots

Peters Creek is the township's most notable stream, and Lick Run runs along Bruceton. On hillside lots above these valleys, runoff is the main reason driveways fail. Water flows down the pavement, gets into cracks, freezes, and opens them wider. It also washes soil from under the edges, leaving them to crack and break off. We build sloped driveways with a thick, well-compacted base, support the edges and give the water a planned path off the pavement.

Brownsville Road, Route 88 and Piney Fork Road

The main roads through the township are Brownsville Road, Route 88 and Piney Fork Road. Driveways that open onto busy roads take extra wear at the apron from turning traffic and plows. We often rebuild that first section of a driveway heavier than the rest. Route 88 is a state route, and changes to a driveway entrance within PennDOT right-of-way may need a Highway Occupancy Permit. We check which agency maintains your road before work at the entrance.

Historic neighbors

The Oliver Miller Homestead, where a log house was built in 1772 and a stone house about 1830, stands in the park. The first shots of the Whiskey Rebellion were fired there in 1794. Homes near the park and along older roads often have mature trees whose roots reach under the driveway. We cut out and repair root-damaged sections without harming the tree more than necessary.

South Park Township Questions

My driveway in Library is steep and the edges keep breaking. Why?

Runoff on steep drives washes soil from under the edges. We rebuild the base, support the edges and send water off the pavement before it can do that.

Do you work on driveways that open onto Route 88?

Yes. Route 88 is a state road, so we check whether a PennDOT permit is needed before any work at the entrance.

Can you repair a driveway damaged by tree roots?

Yes. We cut out the lifted section, address the root where it is safe, rebuild the base and patch.
