Hampton Driveways, Old and New

Asphalt paving in Hampton Township covers homes from several building waves. The township was formed in 1861 from parts of McCandless, Indiana and West Deer townships and named for Moses Hampton, a judge and member of Congress. It grew slowly for decades, then quickly: 6,104 residents in 1950, 10,641 in 1960, 12,515 in 1970, 15,568 in 1990 and 18,470 in 2020. With about 16 square miles of land and 6,627 housing units counted in 2000, lots here are larger than in the inner suburbs, and driveways are often longer.

Which work fits which driveway

Older driveways from the 1950s and 1960s usually need replacement. After sixty years and many patches, the base is often thin or soft, and new asphalt over it will not last. Driveways from the 1970s through the 1990s are often candidates for a resurfacing overlay if they are still flat and firm. Newer driveways usually just need crack sealing and sealcoating every few years. We look at the base, the edges and the drainage before recommending anything.

Longer driveways, more edge

A longer driveway has more edge, and edges are where asphalt fails first, especially where the shoulder is soft or water runs alongside. We compact the base all the way to the edge, support it with shoulder material, and set the grade so runoff leaves the pavement at several points rather than running its full length. On rural parcels we also convert gravel driveways to asphalt, regrading and compacting the stone before paving.

Route 8 and Mt. Royal Boulevard

Route 8 runs through the township, and its junction with Mt. Royal Boulevard is near Oak Hill Farms, the tract John McCaslin obtained in 1794. Homes and businesses with entrances on Route 8 are on a state road, so changes at the entrance within PennDOT right-of-way may need a Highway Occupancy Permit along with a letter from the township approving the location. We confirm what applies before scheduling work at the road.

Neighbors and boundaries

Hampton borders Richland Township to the north, West Deer to the northeast, Indiana Township to the east and southeast, Shaler Township to the south and McCandless to the west. We work across all of them, so if your property line or a shared drive crosses into a neighboring township, we can handle the whole job.

Small lots and HOA drives

We also patch, sealcoat and stripe small lots for offices, churches and businesses, and we pave shared drives and private roads for HOAs. Call (412) 796-9361 to set up a visit in Hampton Township.

Hampton Township Questions

Can a 1960s driveway in Hampton just be resurfaced?

Only if the base is still firm. Most driveways that age have soft spots or ruts, and replacement lasts much longer.

My driveway enters Route 8. What do I need?

Route 8 is a state road. PennDOT requires a Highway Occupancy Permit for work on a driveway within its right-of-way, and we check that before scheduling.

Do you pave HOA private roads?

Yes. We work with HOA boards on private roads and shared drives, including phasing so residents can still get in and out.
