Longer Driveways on South Hills Lots

Asphalt paving in Upper St. Clair is mostly residential work, and the driveways here tend to be longer and wider than in older inner suburbs. The township counted 21,160 people and 7,887 housing units at the 2020 census on about 9.8 square miles, roughly 11 miles south of downtown Pittsburgh. About 9 percent of the land, some 733 acres, is parks and fields spread over 14 parks. With that much open space, lots are generous, and so are the driveways: two- and three-car widths, side-load garages, turnarounds and long runs from the street.

A township with a long paving history

Upper St. Clair was split from St. Clair Township in 1836, and John Fife, the first European settler, arrived in 1762 near what is now the intersection of Washington and McLaughlin Run roads. The first major residential development was built by the Freehold Real Estate Co. in March 1913 along Washington Road. Several mines also operated in the community starting in the late 19th century. Homes near Washington Road and the older roads can have driveways laid over fill or near old workings, and we check for soft or uneven ground before we decide how much base to replace.

Big driveways, big surface area

A large driveway collects a lot of rain. On a sloped lot, that water has to go somewhere, and if it runs across the full width of a three-car drive, it ends up at the garage door or the lowest corner. We plan the grade so water moves to a swale, a drain or the lawn edge, and we keep the surface rolled tight so it sheds rather than soaks. On long runs we also look at where cars turn and stop, since those spots wear faster.

Replacement, widening and overlays

Common jobs in the township include:

  • Full replacement of original driveways from the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s
  • Widening for an extra car or adding a parking pad or turnaround
  • Resurfacing overlays where the base is sound, with the edges cut back at the garage and street
  • Crack sealing and sealcoating to protect newer pavement
  • Repairing sunken areas over old utility trenches

Working in a home rule township

Upper St. Clair adopted a home rule charter in 1973 that took effect in 1976. Rules for work at the street, such as changes to the driveway entrance or curb, come from the township, or from PennDOT where the road is a state route. We confirm what applies to your address before scheduling anything that reaches the right-of-way.

Schools, churches and small lots

We also patch, overlay, sealcoat and stripe lots for churches, offices and small businesses in and around the township, and schedule around services, events and school traffic. Call (412) 796-9361 to set up a visit.

Upper St. Clair Questions

Can you widen my Upper St. Clair driveway for a third car?

Usually, yes. We cut a clean joint along the existing edge, build a full base for the new section and pave so the joint is tight and sheds water.

My long driveway puddles at the garage. Can that be fixed?

Yes. We regrade the base so water moves to a swale or drain before it reaches the garage, then pave over the corrected grade.

Do I need township approval to change my driveway entrance?

Changes at the street usually involve the township, or PennDOT on a state route. We check what your address needs before work reaches the right-of-way.
