Suburban and Rural Paving East of Pittsburgh
Asphalt paving in North Huntingdon covers a big, varied township. North Huntingdon Township, in Westmoreland County, spans about 27.4 square miles, and Wikipedia notes the township maintains about 125 miles of roads. It counted 31,847 residents in 2020, and as of 1980 it was the second-largest municipality in the county. The 2000 census counted 11,578 housing units, at roughly 424 per square mile. That mix of suburban plans near Irwin and the Norwin schools and open land farther out means we pave everything from short subdivision drives to long rural lanes.
A very old township
Huntingdon Township was founded on April 6, 1772, and named after England's Earl of Huntingdon. It was later split into North, East and South Huntingdon and Sewickley. Wikipedia notes that the eastern and western ends were settled separately, Germans in the east and Scottish-Irish in the west, around places like Circleville, Cavitt's Mills and Robbin's Station. Older homes near those historic crossroads tend to have narrow, patched driveways. Later subdivisions have wider drives that often need resurfacing or sealcoating rather than a full tear-out.
Brush Creek and the Youghiogheny
Brush Run and Brush Creek formed the township's early boundary, and its southwestern corner touches the Youghiogheny River. Homes in creek valleys can sit on wetter ground, while homes on the ridges have sloped driveways. Both conditions shorten the life of asphalt if the base and drainage are not right. We add and compact stone where the ground is soft, and grade sloped drives so water leaves the pavement quickly.
The Turnpike and the Lincoln Highway
The Pennsylvania Turnpike and the Lincoln Highway, U.S. Route 30, both cross the township. Route 30 is lined with shopping centers, restaurants, car dealers and service businesses, and those lots need regular patching, sealcoating and restriping. We phase that work so the business stays open. Because Route 30 is a state highway, changes at an entrance within PennDOT right-of-way need a Highway Occupancy Permit and a municipal approval letter, according to PennDOT. We confirm before working there.
Rural lots and gravel conversions
On the township's more rural parcels, many driveways are still gravel. Converting one to asphalt starts with the stone already there: we regrade it, compact it, add new stone where it has thinned, set the crown so water runs off both sides, and then pave. Long drives get edge support so the shoulders do not crumble.
Historic places
The Fullerton Inn and the Andrew and Jennie McFarlane House are both on the National Register, and the township's first school, Birch Spring School, opened in 1782. Call (412) 796-9361 for a free estimate anywhere in North Huntingdon.
